Books being made into movies!

In the wake of Coraline, Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs and Where the Wild Things Are, yet another round of great kids books are going to be adapted into movies within the next few months.  Here are a few of them:

The Lightning Thief (2/12/10)

based on The Lightning Thief by Rick Riordan

The movie based on the first book in the Percy Jackson and the Olympians series is coming out in February, so be sure to check out the book first and get an idea of what you'll be in for.  The series is about a young boy who discovers his father is the Greek god Poseidon and his quest to prevent a supernatural war.

How to Train Your Dragon (3/26/10)

based on How to Train Your Dragon by Cressida Cowell

How to Train Your Dragon is the hilarious story of Hiccup, a teenage viking who doesn't feel like he fits in with the heroic dragon slayer image he is expected to live up to.  The book is the first in a series of similarly titled books (How to Be a Pirate, How to Speak Dragonese, How to Cheat a Dragon's Curse, etc.) and is well worth picking up before the movie hits theaters.

Fantastic Mr. Fox
(Out Now)

based on Fantastic Mr. Fox by Roald Dahl

Roald Dahl is the author of many classic kids books such as Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Matilda, The BFG, James and the Giant Peach, and Fantastic Mr. Fox is every bit as charming as the others.  The movie takes a fairly unconventional approach to telling the classic story of a fox masterminding a plot to steal food from the nearby farmer, so you might want to read (or re-read) this one before you head into the theater

Get Graphic @ the Library!

Check out these new graphic novels that just came into the library!

Fashion Kitty and the Unlikely Hero by Charise Mericle Harper

"Fashion Kitty is experiencing a bit of a slump. Lately, there haven't been as many fashion emergencies to solve. But when the principal of her school makes a new rule that everyone has to wear boring school unforms, Fashion Kitty can finally be able to put her fashion talents to use. But what if some kitties don't want her help? And who is the bad kitty who has been leaving gum under the principal's chair? Fashion Kitty learns that it can be the unlikliest of kitties who can teach the most important fashion lessons."   J / GN / HAR

Outlaw: The Legend of Robin Hood by Tony Lee

"How did Robin of Loxley become Robin Hood? Why did he choose to fight injustice instead of robbing for his own gain? Expressive and gritty, this graphic novel whisks readers back to Crusades-era England, where the Sheriff of Nottingham rules with an iron fist, and in the haunted heart of Sherwood Forest, a defiant rogue — with the help of his men and the lovely Maid Marian — disguises himself to become an outlaw. Lively language and illustrations follow the legendary hero as he champions the poor and provokes a high-stakes vendetta in a gripping adventure sure to draw a new generation of readers."  J / GN / LEE

The Storm in the Barn
by Matt Phelan

"In Kansas in the year 1937, eleven-year-old Jack Clark faces his share of ordinary challenges: local bullies, his father’s failed expectations, a little sister with an eye for trouble. But he also has to deal with the effects of the Dust Bowl, including rising tensions in his small town and the spread of a shadowy illness. Certainly a case of "dust dementia" would explain who (or what) Jack has glimpsed in the Talbot’s abandoned barn — a sinister figure with a face like rain. In a land where it never rains, it’s hard to trust what you see with your own eyes — and harder still to take heart and be a hero when the time comes. With phenomenal pacing, sensitivity, and a sure command of suspense, Matt Phelan ushers us into a world where desperation is transformed by unexpected courage."   J / GN / PHE

BAM! Body and Mind

I am sure many of you have heard people talking about the Swine Flu or the H1N1 viral strain.  It is now more important than ever to stay healthy and practice proper  hygiene.  A government organization called the Center for Disease Control has a great website that will help you do just that.  It will answer many of your questions about health issues.  It also has a lot of tips about how to eat healthy and exercise.  Check it out and let us know what you think.
