Teen Review: New Moon

I'm sure a lot of you went out to see New Moon this past weekend. Check out what one of our teen reviewers had to say about the film:

New Moon started off really well. For a beginning it was pretty exciting. They included the preface and the first chapters perfectly. They had very good fight scenes including the vampires and the wolves. My favorites were between Paul and Jacob and The Volturi and Edward. The good thing was that New Moon the movie stayed very close to the book. They put in the almost attack,the breakup,the motorcycles, Italy,and so much more.

It's a lot better than Twilight. More action and it's a lot more intense. Also the way the actors look. The vampires' make-up look so much better.

Also in the movie it's not as dark. In Twilight the background is like a grayish color, but in New Moon the entire screen was brighter.

Of course the actors were perfect. Taylor,Robert,Kristen, everyone played their roles perfectly. This movie was definitely better. The new director was- he did amazing. Like with the wolves they looked so real and so pretty.

New Moon,I highly recommend. Grade A+, 5 stars. =)

Give Back @ the Library!

Do you want to give back to the community? High school students can sign up to help grade school students at the library or be teen computer assistants. Homework Helpers come in from 4:00 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. one day a week and Computer Assistants come in one day a week from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.. It is a great way to help people, earn community service hours or spice up a job/college application. You can volunteer one day a week or all four. Both volunteer jobs begin October 5. Fill out an application form today at the library!

Teen Review: Catching Fire

The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins was amazing and the second book in the trilogy, Catching Fire, was almost as good. Catching Fire begins with Katniss and Peeta about to go on a victory tour of the 12 Districts but before they set off, Katniss is informed of the beginnings of a rebellion sparked by her defiance in the Games. The sequel is split into three parts and although I thought the first part was a bit slow, I was sorely tempted to pull an all-nighter to finish the book (the only reason I didn’t was because I had school the next day). There is one pretty big twist where what you think is guaranteed not to happen, happens. And of course there is the big question: Gale or Peeta? If you loved The Hunger Games, you MUST read Catching Fire. Guest Review by Gwenhyfar.

Q: So, Russ, what do you remember most about High School?

A: I remember meeting all my friends in the morning in the drama room and playing improv games. I was okay at improv.

Q: Do you have a most embarrassing moment? If so, what is it?

A: My most embarrassing moment of high school was when my date ditched me at my junior prom. I have a picture. (see right)

Q: What are you reading right now? What do you like about it? (Or hate?)

A: I'm reading Outlander by Diana Gabaldon. It's really, really long, but I like it a lot so far. I like the heroine a lot, and the book's hard to put down. I'm listening to the audiobook, and the narrator has a really great (and occasionally hilarious) Scottish accent.

Q: If you were stuck on a desert island and could only bring 5 books, what would you choose?

A: Revenge by Stephen Fry, The Illuminatus! Trillogy by Robert Shea and Robert Anton Wilson, The Afterlife Diet by Daniel Pinkwater, A Wizard of Earthsea by Ursula K. LeGuin, and Lullabies for Little Criminals by Heather O'Neill

Q: What is your favorite movie? Top five?

A: Top Five: Forbidden Zone, Fried Green Tomatoes, Paris Texas, Hitch, and Daisies.

Q: What kind of music do you like? Do you have a favorite artist or group?

A: I like folk music, rap, pop, r&b and calypso, among other things. My favorite musicians right now are Paul Simon, Prince, Mystikal, E-40, Gucci Mane, and They Might Be Giants.

Zine Workshop @ the Library

New Book Spotlight: Marcelo in the Real World

Marcelo’s brain works differently. He hears his internal music, and sometimes sees it as well. He can’t eat and talk at the same time. He gets lost because he gets distracted by all the things going on around him. He has to concentrate on one thing at a time. At the school he’s always gone to, Paterson, that’s not a problem, because it’s a school for kids like Marcelo—kids with “special needs.”

But he’s 17 now, and his father thinks it’s time for Marcelo to find out what the “real world” is like, the world outside Paterson, the world where his differences won’t be accepted, the world that will make him change to fit in. The world of his father’s law firm. So, because Marcelo’s father doesn’t ever change his mind once it’s made up, Marcelo will spend the summer working in the mailroom, instead of training the ponies at Paterson and getting ready for his last year at the school.

That summer job changes Marcelo in ways no one could have expected. He not only learns about the mailroom duties he’s responsible for, he also learns about love and friendship. He learns what trust is, and he learns that some people can be trusted and some can’t. In fact, he learns a lot more about the “real world” and how to live in it than his father ever expected him to.

What Dreams May Come...

Laura Hame and Rose Tiebold's 15th birthdays are approaching. While many people their age would be excited about parties and presents, this birthday is different for the two cousins. They are eligible to test themselves at the Place and see if they're qualified to be Dreamhunters. A Dreamhunter is a person who can cross over and catch impressive dreams that can be relayed to other people.

Dreamhunting runs in the cousins' families. Laura's father Tziga and Rose's mother Grace are famous Dreamhunters whose collections of dreams bring large audiences far and wide to experience them at the Rainbow Opera, a famous dream palace. Despite the fame and wealth, dreamhunting is not always a glamorous occupation, and oftentimes a dreamhunter is on a different schedule from that of their own family.

When it is the girls' turn to try, they each have different expectations. Laura feels anxious while Rose hopes to be a famous dreamhunter like her mother. When the day arrives, both are surprised at the results. Rose doesn't cross to the Place, but Laura does. However, for Laura the occasion is bittersweet; instead of having a pleasant dream called the Wild River, she has a nightmare, and her father has mysteriously disappeared after going on an official job for the government.

Meanwhile, strange events have been occurring that defy explanation. Laura and Rose begin their own investigation, but when Laura continues having unusual dreams and discovers a mysterious letter from her father in the Place, it becomes apparent that there's a far bigger and deadlier secret involving corrupt government officials and their families that no one ever could have dreamed... New Teen Staff Member!

Stop by and say hi to our new teen intern Naphtali! Here's her introductory interview....

Q: So, Naphtali, what do you remember most about High School?

A: Hmmm, High School. Well, I was a big theatre nerd. I spent the majority of my time in the shop helping to build sets or on stage trying to set a scene but mostly I was dealing with the props. In my High School we did three shows a year: a musical, a straight play, and then one produced by the students. Which means that I participated in 12 shows during high school and I was the props mistress for 10 of those. So, I guess what I remember the most about high school is spending almost everyday after school hunting around the perpetually messy props closet. It was terribly exciting, hehe.

Q: Do you have a most embarrassing moment? If so, what is it?

A: Sadly, I do have a most embarrassing moment. One summer, my grandparents decided to take my brother and me to the Indian Reservation where my Great-Grandmother was born. The reservation is in Okalahoma and my grandparents live in Kansas and along the way we drove throught the town where some of my family lived after they left the reservation. It's this tiny town but it's got a zoo and the zoo is really small and you can get pretty close to most of the animals. Well, we were getting a tour of the zoo and we stopped at the lion's cage. I wasn't really listening because it was hot and my brother was being really annoying. All of a sudden the zoo keeper yelled "Step back" and everybody did, except me. See, when lion's pee, they do so in a circle because they're marking their territory. And this lion was marking his territory and I was in the way. And to make matters worse, I was wearing a white shirt.

Q: What are you reading right now? What do you like about it? (Or hate?)

A: Right now, I'm re-reading Masquerade by Melissa De La Cruz. It's the second book in the Blue Bloods series which is about a group of modern day vampires living on the upper west side of New York City. I love Melissa De La Cruz's books like Angels on the Boulevard and The Au-Pairs. Plus, I love books set in New York City. I lived in New York when I was in high school so, it's kinda like reading about home. hehe. But I re-read Masquerade because the third one is coming out this fall so I was just prepping myself.

Q: If you were stuck on a desert island and could only bring 5 books, what would you choose?

A: Only five? Hmmm, well, I would definitely have to take Matilda by Roald Dahl because that's probably my favorite book of all time. Then Sense and Sensibility by Jane Austen because I'm a sap and I love a good 19th century novel. I would also take Terrier by Tamora Pierce because I LOVE that book. I really like Pierce's books that are set in Tortall like the Protector of the Small series featuring Kel but Terrier is definitely my favorite. Also, the book is pretty hefty so it will take plenty of time to read while I'm stuck on the island, hehe. Next would be Crown/Court Duel by Sherwood Smith. It was originally published as two books but they combined it into one edition so I totally NOT cheating, hehe. Finally, I would choose I,Coriander by Sally Gardner because it's such a fascinating book.

Q: What is your favorite movie? Top five?

A: I'm horribly indecisive so I'm gonna have to give you my top five. I'm a big nerd and I love movies about the 19th century/Regency period. So, I'd have to put Pride and Prejudice in my top five and I'm gonna be controversial and pick the Keira Knightley version. Also, I'm a huge fan of musicals so I'm gonna include Once because the music is fantastic and it's not a typical musical. Next would be Sabrina staring Audrey Hepburn and Humphrey Bogart. I'm a huge fan of Audrey Hepburn and this is my favorite of her movies. Oh, and I'm also a huge fan of Wes Anderson so I'm gonna include The Royal Tennenbaums on my list. Finally, I'm gonna go with The Dark Knight because I enjoy action movies and Batman was always my favority super hero.

Q: What kind of music do you like? Do you have a favorite artist or group?

A: The music that I listen to is definitely of the Indie Rock persuasion but I listen to a lot of other stuff. I really enjoy Aimee Mann and lately I've been listening to the soundtrack for Spring Awakening A LOT. But my favorite band is Snow Patrol (U2, Coldplay, and Dave Matthews Band are also on my favorites list). I've seen Snow Patrol in concert four times, including one concert in England, and, simply put, they're awesome.

New Book Spotlight: 13 Little Blue Envelopes

Seventeen-year-old Ginny is living a rather normal, quiet life in New Jersey until a letter arrives from her quirky Aunt Peg. The letter contains a thousand dollars in cash and instructions: get a passport, book a one-way flight to London, then go to an address in New York to pick up a package before heading to the airport. NEW BOOK SPOTLIGHT

With big, black rimmed-glasses, ten extra teeth, water on the brain, and a physique like a toothpick, Arnold Spirit gets no respect from anyone. His parents, who “came from poor people who came from poor people who came from poor people, all the way back to the very first poor people” have little hope of ever changing anything. That's the way it is on the rez in Wellpinit, Washington.

Fed up with it all, Arnold throws a book in class and accidentally hits a teacher. The teacher tells him that the only way he’ll ever get out of this hopelessness is to leave.

When Arnold goes, He chooses to go to an all-white, rich person school 20 miles away. In the eyes of all his friends at the rez, he becomes a traitor. He tries to survive at his new school, and everything changes—but Arnold must decide if its for the better.

April is Autism Awareness Month.

Do you know anybody who has autism? Maybe you know someone at your school or in your family who has it. Autism is a fairly common brain disorder (1 out of 500 people have it) that usually appears in early childhood. It is more common among boys than among girls. Autism can be mild to severe, and not all autistic people have the same symptoms. Doctors don't know exactly what causes autism, and currently there is no cure, although there are some therapies that help autistic people reach out to others more and improve their language skills.

Here are some fiction titles from the library about autism. If you want more information or need suggestions of other things to read, please don't hesitate to ask a librarian!

The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time, by Mark Haddon. Despite his overwhelming fear of interacting with people, Christopher, a mathematically-gifted, autistic fifteen-year-old boy, decides to investigate the murder of a neighbor's dog and uncovers secret information about his mother.

Journeys inside the mind of Lou Arrendale, an autistic man, who is asked to undergo a new, experimental treatment designed to cure autism, as he decides whether or not he should risk a medical procedure that could make him "normal."

She thinks she may want to speak but she's afraid. She's terribly afraid that the others will learn her secret. The others consist of girls suffering from anorexia, substance abuse and other emotional problems. Each day they meet for group and talk, talk, talk. Callie just can't. She can't even talk to her psychiatrist. She wants to but the words won't come out.

When Amanda arrives at Sick Minds, she is assigned to the group. When she announces to the group that her "problem" is that she enjoys cutting herself, Callie is horrified at the reaction of the other girls. They are repulsed at Amanda's behavior. After all, how could anyone deliberately cut themselves and cause such horrid scars? How will the girls react when they find out that is exactly what Callie does? How can she understand why she does this? How can she learn to stop? Will she ever get better?

New Book Spotlight: My Swordhand is Singing

In the bitter winter, Tomas and his son, Peter, settle in a small village as woodcutters. Teen Book Discussion....

Have you ever known someone who stood out from the crowd? Maybe someone who isn’t afraid to be different, regardless of the way people treat them? Stargirl is just that kind of a person. No one knows how to deal with her eccentricities in high school. Stargirl plays her ukulele and sings “Happy Birthday” to people in the cafeteria! Her clothes are literally out of this world, and she says what is on her mind with little regard for the consequences. Her name? . . . well, she changes it whenever the mood strikes her.
