"L" is for Large Print

Ever wonder why the library doesn’t always have all of the books in a series in large print?  Unfortunately, there are usually only a limited number of large print edition books produced, so some titles sell out before the library can buy a copy. But sometimes we get lucky and a title is re-released, which happened with Sue Grafton’s Kinsey Milhone mysteries.  We’ll be adding a new title each month until we have the entire series. You can get to know, or reacquaint yourself, with hard-boiled detective Kinsey Milhone in “A” is for Alibi.

New Spanish Fiction

¡Caramba! Nina Marie Martinez

The make-believe California border town of Lava Landing, equally steeped in Mexican culture and American dreams, is at the mercy of a slumbering volcano, a sly metaphor for the precariousness of life. Here best friends Natalie and Consuelo, luscious and adventurous women in their twenties, work at the Big Cheese Factory and entertain themselves by dressing to the nines, cruising around in Natalie's 1963 convertible Cadillac El Dorado, dancing, and having their hair done by transvestite True-Dee. They are also simpatico with Lulabell, a "practiced and capable witch" who is every bit as alluring as they are even though she's twice their age and the mother of their lifelong friend, Javier, a born-again mariachi who puts his faith to the test by falling in love with a drug dealer. Everyone is on the brink of earth-shaking change as otherworldly forces, including Consuelo's dead father, conspire in this smart, antic, sexy, and funny frolic. Martinez both celebrates and pokes fun at Mexican traditions (including the Bingo-like game Loteria, the source of the novel's lively illustrations) as she asks what it means to be a man and what it means to be a woman and considers how we cope with loneliness, make the transition from romance to love, and age with grace.

La Hija de Chuparrosa Luis Alberto Urrea

Twenty years in the making, Urrea's epic novel recounts the true story of his great-aunt Teresita. In 1873, amid the political turbulence of General Porfirio Díaz's Mexican republic, Teresita is born to a fourteen-year-old Indian girl, "mounted and forgotten" by her white master. Don Tomàs Urrea later takes his illegitimate daughter into his home, where she learns to bathe every week and read "Las Hermanas Brontë." But Teresita also continues a folk education as a curandera, discovering healing powers and a mystical relationship with God. Indian pilgrims swarm to the Urrea ranch, where "St. Teresita," a mestiza Joan of Arc, kindles in them a powerful faith in God and a perilous hunger for revolution. The novel brings to life not only the deeply pious figure whom Díaz himself dubbed "the Most Dangerous Girl in Mexico" but also the blood-soaked landscape of pre-revolutionary Mexico.

Bone Song, by Jeff Meaney. Gritty futuristic noir blends with Gothic fantasy to create a seductive world of death and desire. Here an honest cop must face his own darkest impulses as he hunts a killer through a city of the dead. There have been four celebrity murders already. Now Lieutenant Donal Riordan must make sure that Tristopolis isn't the scene of a fifth. But the necropolis's vast underground network is already mobilizing for a battle of epic proportions against a powerful death cult whose dark influence reaches up to the highest echelons of the elite. Riordan's only hope is an unlikely alliance with a "para-live" female agent as they hunt - both above ground and below - among gargoyles and zombies, spirit slaves and assassins, for the killers even the dead have reason to fear.

Hacking Harvard, by Robin Wasserman.  When three brilliant nerds--Max Kim, Eric Roth, and Isaac "The Professor" Schwarzbaum--bet $20,000 that they can get anyone into Harvard, they take on the Ivy League in their quest for popularity, money, and the love of a beauty queen valedictorian.
