You can now sign up for the following computer workshops: Computer Basics, Internet Basics, E-mail Basics, Web 2.0. Computer workshops are designed to give the new computer user an introduction to various computer skills. The workshops are a one time session, and do not meet on an ongoing basis. Workshops are free, although there is a five dollar deposit required to secure your space. Northlake Public Library District card holders are given priority. Individuals who do not have Northlake Public Library District cards will be placed on a waiting list and notified if there is space prior to the workshop.

Did you know that October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month?

Q: What is cancer?

A: Cancer is a disease that occurs when cells become abnormal and divide without control or order. Each organ in the body is made up of various kinds of cells. Cells normally divide in an orderly way to produce more cells only when they are needed. This process helps keep the body healthy. If cells divide when new cells are not needed, they form too much tissue. This extra tissue, called a tumor, can be benign or malignant.

Q: How many new cases of breast cancer were estimated in the United States in 2009?

A: According to the American Cancer Society (ACS), an estimated 192,370 new cases of invasive breast cancer are expected to be diagnosed among women in the United States last year. Approximately 1,910 new cases are expected in men. The ACS also reports that an estimated 40,610 breast cancer deaths are expected in 2009 (40,170 women, 440 men).

Q: How common is breast cancer in the United States?

A: Breast cancer is the most common cancer in women, aside from skin cancer. Q: How can women get low-cost or free mammograms?

A: For information on low- or no cost mammography screening, contact the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) at (888) 842-6355 or visit their Web site at www.cdc.gov. Women seeking mammograms at a reduced rate are urged to make their appointment early in the year, as space may be limited. To find a breast-imaging facility, contact the National Cancer Institute at (800) 4-CANCER.

Una familia honorable puede ubicarse en el género de la literatura de posguerra en Centroamérica. Los personajes viven y actúan en los primeros años del siglo XXI, pero años atrás cada cual estuvo ubicado, queriéndolo o no, en espacios distintos y, a veces, opuestos, dentro de una sociedad herida por la guerra. El tiempo muestra cómo cada uno de ellos tiene una naturaleza humana con luces y sombras que les permiten acercarse pero que, también, pueden llevarles a la separación. Más allá de los afectos y los desamores, sin embargo, todos se encuentran inmersos en una sociedad en crisis, a la que cada uno responde y se acomoda de distinta forma; así, mientras hay quienes se involucran en actividades vinculadas al narcotráfico, otros tratan de contribuir con la construcción de un mundo más justo. Como en otras novelas de Rafael Cuevas Molina, hay una presencia importante de personajes femeninos en cuyas personalidades el autor bucea, mostrando diferentes matices a veces muy contradictorios que los caracterizan. A través suyo se va pefilando un mundo en el que la cotidianeidad expresa diferencias sociales, aspiraciones, grandezas y mezquindades de los guatemaltecos ladinos de Ciudad de Guatemala

La rebelión de los zendales por Ronald Flores

A pesar de los incesantes “motines de indios“, una única rebelión indígena se suscitó en Centro América durante el período colonial. Sucedió en Chiapas, a inicios del siglo XVIII. Aunque se basa en fuentes históricas, como “Historia de las Provincias de San Vicente de Chiapas y Guatemala” del cronista Fray Francisco Ximénez y “Motines de indios” de Severo Martínez Peláez, “La rebelión de los zendales” de Ronald Flores es una obra de ficción en la que se conjugan distintas facetas de una rebelión que estremeció los fundamentos del orden colonial. “Tzonatzín, diosa madre de la tierra, reencarna en una sensual joven de la etnia zendal. Los rituales sagrados se inician y anuncian la restauración del orden natural de las cosas en estas tierras dominadas por y para la gracia de Dios. La eterna guerra contra la injusticia tiene una nueva voz con esta novela épica que hace la rebelión indígena de 1714 una excusa para retomar un asunto tan humano y a la vez tan divino. En La rebelión de los zendales, Ronald Flores nos comparte, a manera de ficción, acontecimientos que no son tan accesibles en el recuento ‘oficial’ de la historia colonial. Nuestro pasado no es de sometimiento total, también es de resistencia activa” (citado de la contraportada).

Gringo viejo por Carlos Fuentes

Un fulgurante best seller mexicano en Estados Unidos, Gringo viejo (1985) es una de las novelas más famosas de Carlos Fuentes, figura central de la narrativa y la ensayística mexicana. En Gringo viejo Fuentes plasma los turbulentos años de la lucha revolucionaria en México, cuando un viejo escritor norteamericano escéptico, insalvablemente amargo, que no se resigna a esperar la muerte por enfermedad o por accidente, decide cruzar la frontera de su país en busca de una muerte digna.Inspirada en la desaparición del escritor Ambrose Bierce en tiempos de la Revolución mexicana, la novela aborda temas como la muerte, el intercambio cultural y, sobre todo, una constante de la obra de Fuentes: la identidad mexicana. Purgatorio por Tomás Eloy Martinez

Tomás Eloy Martínez vivió en el exilio y escribió este relato conmovedor e inolvidable en busca de la memoria que no pudo tener. Con maestría avanza sobre la débil línea entre verdad e ilusión, y expande la misma más allá de los límites del género. Un lenguaje austero al servicio de una historia tan extraña como intensamente real da por resultado la mejor obra de un autor señalado como clásico por la crítica internacional. Banned Books Week is an annual event celebrating the freedom to read and the importance of the First Amendment. LIBRARY BOARD TRUSTEE VACANCY

There is currently a vacancy on the Board. If you are interested in serving as a trustee, you must be 18 years of age, be a registered voter and reside within the Northlake Public Library District, either in Northlake, Stone Park or unincorporated Leyden Township.

Mango is free of charge to patrons, and offers a fun, fast and convenient solution to our community’s growing language learning needs. It’s the easiest way to learn to speak a foreign language!

Mango’s online language learning system focuses on teaching actual conversation skills for a wide variety of languages. Each lesson combines real-life situations and audio from native speakers with an easy-to-follow interface and simple, clear instructions. Join the Summer Northlake Community Book Club!

While Page Turners is on a break, our regular members have decided to keep the book club going over the summer. They're looking for new members and would love to have YOU join them! The next meeting will take place on Wednesday, July 15th at 7:00 pm. The book selection for this month is "Beautiful Boy" by David Sheff. Great new titles in Spanish @ Northlake Public Library District

La Apelación by John Grisham

A Mississippi jury returns a $41-million verdict against a chemical company accused of dumping carcinogenic waste into a small town's water supply. The company's ruthless billionaire CEO is thwarted and the good guys (a courageous young woman who lost her husband and child and her two lawyers who've gone half a million dollars in debt preparing her case) receives its just reward. This sounds like the end of a Grisham legal thriller, but instead it's the beginning of a book-length lesson in how greed and big business have corrupted our electoral and judicial systems. Grisham's characters are over-the-top. The CEO and the other equally overdone villains—his venal trophy wife, a self-serving senator and a pair of smarmy political fixers—as well as the unbelievably good-hearted, self-sacrificing lawyers and an honorable state judge, are one dimensional. Michael Beck, with his natural Southern drawl, does a fine job of adding credibility and nuance to the large cast. But his efforts are for naught. In fact, the more he makes us feel for these characters, the less apt we are to be satisfied with the sourball moral of Grisham's downbeat discourse.

If you have fines, this is your chance to clear your record!

Through Dec. 30th, the library is holding a special food drive. Here is how it works: For every can or box of non-perishable food you donate, we will reduce your fines by one dollar. There is no limit to donations redeemed. Even if you have $50.00 in fines, you can clear it by donating 50 items. The cans and boxes must be in good condition with labeling/packaging intact and the food must not be expired.

Please note that this program is only for fines for Northlake Public Library District items. We cannot waive fines for replacements, interlibrary loans or damaged items.

El pergamino de la seducción: una novelaby Gioconda Belli

Belli's rigorously imagined and sumptuously presented novel is a dual story of obsessive love, with a bi-level plot alternating between past and present. From the past, the author retrieves the almost legendary tale of Queen Juana of Castile, eldest daughter of Ferdinand and Isabella of Spain, and her alleged madness caused by the premature death of her handsome husband, Philip of Hapsburg. The contemporary story line is also set in Spain; over a period of time and in piecemeal fashion, a teenage student in a convent school, Lucia by name, learns from a college professor, who will become her first lover, of his own obsession: Queen Juana and her life story, specifically the unanswerable question of whether she was insane or simply the victim of a smear campaign by the male forces at court who would seek to control her. Framed as an "as told to" story, Chick quickly narrates her funeral; his drink-fueled loss of savings, job ("sales") and family; and his descent into loneliness and isolation. After a suicide attempt, Chick encounters Pauline's ghost. Together, the two revisit Pauline's travails raising her children alone after his father abandons them: she braves the town's disapproval of her divorce and works at a beauty parlor, taking an extra job to put money aside for the children's education. Pauline cringes at the heartache Chick inflicted as a demanding child, obnoxious teen and brusque, oblivious adult chasing the will-o'-the-wisp of a baseball career. Through their story, Albom foregrounds family sanctity, maternal self-sacrifice and the destructive power of personal ambition and male self-involvement. He wields pathos as if it were a Louisville Slugger—shoveling dirt into Pauline's grave, Chick hears her spirit cry out, " 'Oh, Charley. How could you?' "—but Albom often strikes a nerve on his way to the heart.

Fabulous new books in Spanish

Voces sin fronteras. Antología Vintage Español de literature mexicana y chicana contemporánea edited by Cristina Garcia

García [Soñar en cubano; Random House Español, 1993 (Dreaming in Cuban; Ballantine, 1992)], a National Book Award nominee and recipient of the Guggenheim scholarship and the Whiting Writers’ Award, is a Cuban native raised in New York City. Here, she compiles the literary works by Mexican, Chicano, and Latin American writers. These short stories portray common social obstacles that Latin Americans face when migrating to the United States, as well as their struggles with identity, culture, religion, traditions, and nationality. Some are excerpts taken from longer stories, such as Juan Rulfo’s Pedro Páramo, while others are short poems such as Jimmy Santiago Baca’s “Meditaciones del Valle Sur: Poema IX,” which narrates Eddy’s tragic story. Considered a problem child, Eddy took his own life, an act of rebellion against injustices society made him face. In Gloria Anzaldúa’s Cómo domar una lengua salvaje (“How To Tame a Wild Language”), the author explains that communicating in Spanish can be difficult for speakers in this country because they must adopt the language's numerous dialects (e.g., Spanglish, Mexican Spanish, Tex Mex, Pachuco, Chicano Spanish), depending on whom they are addressing. The book is divided into five parts: “Early Influences” (e.g., Alfonso Reyes, Juan Rulfo); “Chicano Voices #1” (e.g., Gloria Anzaldúa, Rudolfo Anaya); “Contemporary Mexican Voices” (e.g., Carlos Fuentes, Octavio Paz); “Chicano Voices #2” (e.g., Sandra Cisneros, Ana Castillo); and “New Talents” (e.g., Ignacio Padilla, Ángeles Mastretta). This book, which includes six works translated by the renowned Valenzuela, is similar to Anzaldúa’s Borderland/La Frontera (Aunt Lute Books, 1987), which includes short stories, poems, and excerpts of other works.

Elena sabe by Claudia Piñeiro

This novel about an exasperated relationship between a mother and her daughter is narrated in third person from the mother’s point of view. The mother, Elena, a poor woman with Parkinson’s disease, launches a search for her daughter’s alleged assassin. She appears to have been hanged from the bell tower of the church, and even though everybody agreed that it was a suicide, “Elena knows” that this is impossible; she is sure that her daughter had been killed. Since no one helps her or supports her assumption, Elena makes a long, tiring trip—to meet a woman who her daughter, a practicing Catholic, had encouraged not to have an abortion and who Elena supposed was now happy and grateful. But the woman hates her husband and so hates Elena’s daughter for preventing the abortion. “I can’t help you because I was the one that killed your daughter,” she says, but we know that she killed her only with her thoughts because she had been prevented from achieving something that signified her freedom. The novel deftly features the difficulties of the mother-daughter relationship, with its near total interdependency. Elena is difficult, dominant, and obsessive, and she and her daughter were hardly able to communicate even with people to whom they were close; most people are just too busy with their own affairs. Ultimately, the theme here is loneliness, and the story communicates the anguish of it characters with great skill.

El niño perdido by Dave Pelzer

Following A Child Called It (Health Communications, 1995), which was nominated for a Pulitzer Prize and appears frequently on high school reading lists, this is the second in a planned trilogy from motivational author and speaker Pelzer. Here he tells his story from the time he left his abusive mother and alcoholic father, through his experiences in five foster homes and juvenile detention, and how he eventually made it into the Air Force. He was a defiant, rebellious boy who, despite his background and personality, managed to endear himself to many guardians, social workers, and teachers. Pelzer writes in an honest, sometimes rambling, style; he is never bitter, and his story will find many sympathetic readers. However, he leaves many questions unanswered (which may appear in the third book), dealing with his adult-life relationships, his son, the mother of that child, and the ways he turned his life around.

La última de las muchachas del menu by Denise Chavez

The character of Rocio Esquibel, as a child, young woman, teacher, and aspiring writer, gives unity to this collection of seven related stories set in New Mexico. Chavez writes feelingly of things she obviously knows well, giving us a neighborhood full of memorable friends and relatives, compadres and comadres , handymen, hospital helpers, grandmothers, mothers, sisters. The title story concerns Rocio's funny and touching experiences in a summer job at a hospital. "Space Is a Solid," crackling with authenticity and longing, details the relationship of teacher and pupil. "Willow Game" describes the inexplicable sorrow of children; "Shooting Stars," the beauty of old women. These stories fairly shimmer with the warmth, tones, and language of the Southwest. A worthy addition to collections of Chicano women's fiction.

Self-described film detective Valentino, who works as a film archivist at U.C.L.A., makes his novel-length debut in the engaging first of a new series from Shamus-winner Estleman. Valentino stumbles on the find of a lifetime when he inspects the Oracle, a decaying 1920s movie theater he's considering purchasing. An abandoned storage room contains reels of film that may be the only surviving prints of Erich von Stroheim's legendary epic, Greed. The further discovery of a skeleton of unknown vintage in the old building complicates matters. Aided by academic colleagues, Valentino tries to eat his cake and have it, too, by cooperating with the police inquiry into what might be a case of foul play without revealing the existence of the film reels, which he fears might be damaged if seized as evidence.

Professional Baseball Player Visits the Library!

Vince Harrison, from the Schaumburg Flyers baseball team visited the Northlake Public Library on Thursday, June 12. He captivated his audience with his discussion about his experiences as a professional baseball player and teacher. Mr. Harrison also talked about the importance of a college education and how it has helped his career.

E-BAY Day

E-Bay day was a success. On June 17th representatives from the U.S. Post Office showed enthusiastic patrons how to use E-Bay. They demonstrated simple steps to setting up an E-Bay business and how to ship using the U.S. Post Office. We hope you enjoyed their presentation.

It's Summer Reading Time!

Pageturners Book Club

Come to our Pageturners Book Club this month for a discussion of The No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency by Alexander McCall Smith.
